Airport seeks more European routes
01.05.08
Durham Tees Valley Airport has targeted an increase in its range of European destinations and cashing in on the booming in-bound tourism market to boost its passenger numbers. The airport wants to boost passenger traffic to 2 million by 2012, and sees gaining new routes to Europe as key to this target.
A spokesman for the airport said it would work with airlines currently operating flights from the hub to increase the range of options available to passengers and consolidate its position as ‘a gateway to the region’.
Neil Pakey, deputy chief executive officer at Durham Tees Valley Airport's owner, Peel Group, said: ‘We are targeting summer sun spots in Europe and looking to increase traffic between Teesside and Heathrow and Amsterdam – two destinations that give our passengers access to global destinations. In addition, we are looking to take advantage of in-bound tourism, which is one of the fastest growing markets in the aviation industry.’
Yesterday, the airport began work on a £3m scheme to install airfield ground lighting along the runway. This work is expected to be complete by October.
