Police were called to Durham Tees Valley Airport after passengers on a plane diverted because of the snow became ‘disruptive’. A 39-year-old man from Hartlepool was arrested and cautioned for using threatening behaviour on the aircraft.
The flight from Alicante was bringing holidaymakers back to the UK,, but was diverted to Newcastle because of the weather, and when that airport closed it landed at Durham Tees Valley. Passengers grew angry when they were told the plane would still take off when safe and fly on to Newcastle - 50 miles further north.
After a wait of over two hours, the captain allowed the now restless holidaymakers to disembark at Durham - but only after informing police of the trouble. Coach transfers were arranged for the passengers from Durham Tees Valley to Leeds Bradford.
A Durham Police spokesman said: ‘We were told that passengers were not allowed off because the apron was sheet ice and dangerous. The arrested man's concerns were genuine, but his behaviour was unacceptable. He was interviewed and given a caution.’
