Giant plane pays flying visit to Durham Tees Valley
09.12.08
A giant plane touched down at Durham Tees Valley Airport yesterday. The Antonov airliner arrived bearing a load of 3 army helicopters. The 226 feet long Russian freighter arrived from Athens, with its cargo believed to be destined for a nearby airbase.
A spokesman for the airport said: ‘Some people were surprised to see it as its one of the biggest in the world. But this is a great example of what Durham Tees Valley can handle. Although we are a small regional airport, this demonstrates perfectly our capabilities.’
The Antonov An-124 is one of the biggest aircraft in the world. It is capable of flying up to 9,320 miles with loads of up to 150 tonnes. With its cargo delivered, the aircraft left the airport yesterday afternoon.
