Rare newts rescued from Durham Tees Valley Airport hotel
12.04.08
A rescue operation was carried out yesterday to move hundreds of newts living in a half-built swimming pool at a Durham Tees Valley Airport hotel. It is hoped a new pond will be built on the site in the near future, so the newts can be returned.
The pool was part of a hotel scheme at the airport, but the original developer went bankrupt and the amphibians took up residence. Now the area has been bought by Sven Investments, who want to build business units on the site at the airport.
Among the newts are the protected great crested variety. The developer called in conservationists to shift the newts so the site can be developed. A spokeswoman said: ‘They will be taken to a more newt-friendly temporary home, but we are hoping to create a pond on the site so they can come back later.’
