MP wants RAF to move to airport

A plan to boost activity at Durham Tees Valley Airport has been put forward by Darlington MP, Jenny Chapman, the Gazette reports. She wants operations from RAF Leeming to be switched to the airport, which she believes would boost the hub and also cut costs for the RAF.
Last week Craig Richmond, chief executive of Peel Airports, which runs the airport, said time was running out for the company to find a way out of a desperate financial crisis, with passengers expected to dip below 200,000 this year, from a peak of 920,000 in 2006. He said: ‘I don’t know what the time frame is but, if it can’t turn around, something’s going to change.’
Mrs Chapman has written to the Defence Secretary Liam Fox, suggesting the switch of operations from RAF Leeming to the airport. She said: ‘It would result in savings to the Ministry of Defence and would mean more business for Durham Tees Valley Airport.'
