Airline could move flights to Newcastle
19.08.08
Durham Tees Valley Airport could lose holiday flights as airlines consider changes to their routes and fleets, the Journal reports. As the economy continues to slow, Scottish budget airline Flyglobespan has launched a review of all of its flights out of the airport, with rumours on the world wide web that it could pull out and try to secure slots at larger near neighbour Newcastle Airport, which is itself reeling from some recent holiday flight losses.
Flyglobespan currently flies to southern Spain and Tenerife from Durham Tees Valley, but this could change if it gets a better offer or thinks it will find a more profitable customer base from Newcastle, the newspaper reports. The review comes as financial pressures caused by record fuel costs and weakening demand force airlines to look hard at costs. A spokesman for the airline refused to deny the internet chat room rumours, which we wouldn't either if we were in negotiations with the airport.
