MP wants Government support for Heathrow flights
21.01.12
A local MP has called on the Government to help reinstate the route between Durham Tees Valley Airport and Heathrow in a bid to save the struggling airport, the Gazette reports. Stockton South MP James Wharton called on Transport Minister Theresa Villiers to support the move - saying it would make the airport more saleable and boost the region.
Formerly a popular route, the Heathrow link was discontinued in 2009. Mr Wharton believes reintroducing it would help secure the airport’s future. He said Durham Tees Valley is a ‘great facility with the potential to be hugely successful with the right buyer. But we must all do what we can to build on that potential. If a Heathrow route could be secured it would be a game changer.'
‘Had the previous Government intervened to ensure that provision for regional flights was made in national airports, it would be more profitable and successful today. We have a chance to make the case for a Heathrow link again and I will be doing what I can to fight for Teesside.’
