Survey reveals passenger anger at access charge
15.10.10
A passenger charge to use Durham Tees Valley Airport is ‘outrageous’ according to nearly three-quarters of locals surveyed by a newspaper. Of the over 200 responses to the Evening Gazette’s survey on the new charge to be introduced next month just to use the terminal, over 150 said the plans were outrageous. 64.6% said the surcharge would put them off using the airport in the future.
The Gazette ran an online survey on the issue after Durham Tees Valley Airport announced last Friday that it would introduce the surcharge of £6 for adults and £3 for those aged 3 to 15 from November 15. The move is an attempt to secure the future of the airport, with the charges likely to bring in around £500,000 a year.
The survey showed families on Teesside - at a time when the area has been hard-hit by the recession and faces further threats from budget cuts - are unsympathetic. Over half - 52.6% - also said they no longer feel the same loyalty to the airport since the name change from Teesside Airport.
