New owners plan to boost passengers
22.05.10
Boosting passengers using Durham Tees Valley Airport will be the top priority for the Canadian firm that took a majority stake in its owners, Peel Airports, this week, the Northern Echo reports. Vancouver Airport Services, which operates a string of airports around the world, reached an agreement on Monday with The Peel Group to buy a 65% share in Peel Airports Limited, which operates Liverpool, Robin Hood and Durham Tees Valley airports.
Craig Richmond has been brought in as chief executive of the company and the newspaper reports that boosting passengers at Durham Tees Valley will be his initial focus. Passenger number more than halved in 2009 to 288,000, down from 647,000 in 2008 after number of airlines pulled out and the aviation industry was hit hard by the economic downturn.
Mr Richmond said: ‘We are starting right away meeting management and the team, and we are starting at Durham Tees Valley. The big focus will be to turn it around. Our intention is to increase the passenger numbers. We will be doing everything we can to bring passengers back and make the airport profitable again.’
