Excelsis founder arrested

The Nigerian businessman who tried to establish an airline to restore flights between Durham Tees Valley Airport and London was arrested and quizzed by fraud squad officers on Friday, the Northern Echo reports. Victor Bassey, the founder of Excelsis Airways - whose entire management team (also its entire staff) quit recently in a row over pay - was taken in for questioning on Friday morning, and released on bail later that day.
A Police spokeswoman told the newspaper: ‘Detectives from Cleveland Police Fraud Investigation Team arrested a 49-year-old man on suspicion of fraud. The man was taken to Middlesbrough Police Office to be questioned. He was released on bail Friday evening following questioning.'
Mr Bassey was reported to police by the company’s management team, which last week announced it had resigned, claiming it had not received ‘a single penny’ for work carried out, and raising concerns about mounting creditors who also had not been paid.
The news is the latest twist in a saga that originally promised good news for Tees Valley’s business commuters. In August, Mr Bassey said he had secured £10m that would fund a three-times-a-day service from Durham Tees Valley Airport (DTVA) to London City by the end of the year. However, at the time he also said that he was 'backed by God'!
