Airport oppose new hotel plans

Plans for a new hotel near Durham Tees Valley Airport are being recommended for approval by council planning officers, despite objections from the local regeneration agency and from the airport itself.
Northcare Developments have submitted outline proposals for a new 80 bedroom hotel on land near Middleton St George. Planning officers at Darlington Borough Council have recommended the application is approved, even though both Tees Valley Regeneration and the owners of the airport, Peel Airports, have objected to the plans.
OneNorthEast is also concerned the proposed development could undermine a similar plan for a 100 bedroom hotel and business park at the airport, an important part of the airport's expansion plans. This was recently given approval after the Secretary of State for Local Government and Communities decided not to call the matter in.
However, the council planning officer's report says government policy states that market forces should determine the appropriateness of having a number of hotels in close proximity.
Local councillor Doris Jones added: 'The parish council didn't object to this because it's on a brownfield site. It's a bit of a nimby attitude for the airport to take. They can't expect to monopolise all the hotels around it.'
The planning committee will meet to discuss the application at 13:30 next Wednesday (August 1).
