New airport hotel planned

Durham Tees Valley Airport will get a new hotel if a planning application submitted to Darlington Council is approved, the Teeside Evening Gazette reports. Developer C J Leonard has submitted proposals for a 130-bedroom hotel incorporating car parking facilities for 134 cars to be built on the existing Lancaster House site, which already has out line permission for a smaller hotel.
The hotel planned will be owned by the Hilton Group and be operated under the Hampton by Hilton budget brand. It will more than double the number of rooms available near the airport, adding to the existing accommodation that includes the 19-bedroom Spa Hotel and the 59 bedroom St George Hotel.
A statement by the developers accompanying the application says: ‘Two existing hotels can already be found within the airport complex area. There remains, however, a clear demand for additional accommodation.’
Jeremy Good, of planning consultants England and Lyle, told the newspaper: ‘The scheme would improve the choice of hotels in the airport complex and is fully consistent with local and regional planning guidance.'
'The site already has outline planning permission for a 74-bedroom hotel. It is our clients aim to achieve planning consent for a purpose-built 130 bedroom hotel following the principles of the previous decision. The hotel has a contemporary design and reflects the functional requirements of the Hilton Group.'
